We're happy to finally share the results of our summer focus group sessions, which were shaped by the valuable input of our residents. These gatherings, including sessions with our Spanish and Cantonese-speaking communities, gave us interesting insights. And we loved the process, as it allowed us to connect with more community members and discover their real interest in contributing to and resolving issues in our community.
In these divisive times, projects like these give us hope, and serve as a reminder of the importance of working together- and forging ahead. Thanks to all who were involved for your support!
Without further ado, let's dive into the ranking results and some of their key insights.
Top Ranked Project: Safe Walking and Biking for All
Score: 468
Consistent with San Leandro 2050's previous outreach sessions, creating safe opportunities for walking and biking remains the top priority for our residents.
Here's what our community had to say:
People are eager to see protected and continuous bike lanes, which they believe are essential for encouraging more biking and walking.
Improved connectivity and safety for biking and walking from neighborhoods to downtown is desired, along with traffic calming measures on E14th Street.
Prioritizing bike parking and repair assistance is a shared goal.
Second Ranked Project: Building Affordable Housing Close to Transportation and Jobs
Score: 443
Here's what our community had to say:
There's a strong desire to see housing of all types in various locations, including an emphasis on 'missing middle' housing options in downtown and single-family home neighborhoods.
Residents wish for more affordable utility costs to be part of affordable housing solutions.
'Rent to own' options have garnered significant interest among renters looking to purchase a home.
Third Ranked Project: Shared Community Spaces
Score: 403
Community participants have shown support for this project, although there is some uncertainty about what a 'community resilience center' entails.
Here's what our community had to say:
There is a broad appreciation for the garden's role in providing access to green space and enabling food cultivation, particularly for apartment dwellers.
A desire exists for a 'sharing economy' aspect where people can rent or trade resources like home air purifiers, tools, and other equipment.
Residents wish to see robust training and educational elements, including resources and classes for children and the elderly.
Fourth Ranked Project: Electric Trucks for Better Air
Score: 381
This project received lower scores, not because of a lack of support, but due to a lack of clarity on how the technology would work. Further community engagement is needed as this technology progresses.
Here's what our community had to say:
The need for clarity on how independent truck owners can benefit from and use electric trucks and charging in San Leandro.
A desire for the integration of solar and battery storage to ensure clean energy and prevent grid strain during power outages.
A wish to provide options for truck drivers while they wait for charging (e.g., cafes, gyms, or nearby community centers), and greenery like trees within the charging depot.
Questions about whether trucks waiting to charge will cause traffic congestion in the surrounding neighborhood.
NOW WHAT?
Now that we have identified some major priorities for our residents, we are eager to move forward. Our next steps include developing strategies for partnerships, project plans, and identifying funding for these important programs.
