Hope for Safer Streets in San Leandro!

There have been some changes in the State and in the City to improve considtions for Folks to get out of cars. This is progress, but there is much more to be done. Here are a few of the bigger upgrades we saw happen last year

Victory for Pedestrians and Cyclists: Complete Streets Law (SB 960)

After eight years of effort, the Complete Streets Bill (SB 960) is law! This legislation requires Caltrans to build infrastructure that supports pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit users on state-managed roadways. It’s a big win for active transportation and safety.  In San Leandro, this law applies to Davis Street and East 14th Street—both state highways—and it opens the door to safer streets for everyone.

San Leandro’s Updated Bike and Pedestrian Master Plan:

Bike Lanes

On December 2, 2024, the San Leandro City Council approved an updated Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan. It calls for a new network of Class IV bike lanes, which are physically separated from car traffic. This change is initially focused along the Crosstown Corridor, covering Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street. This change will make biking and walking safer, more accessible, and enjoyable.

The next step is to find funding, Regional, State or Federal, and for residents to support the City in this effort of making the streets safer for all!

More safety for Walking

The Crosstown Corridor Study also has plans to improve pedestrian safety along Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street:

  • Improved Crosswalks: High-visibility crosswalks at key intersections to make crossing safer.

  • Pedestrian Islands: Median islands at wide crossings to give pedestrians a safe spot to pause while crossing.

  • Sidewalk Improvements: Wider, clearer sidewalks for a more comfortable walking experience.

  • Traffic Calming: Features like curb extensions and speed humps to slow down cars and prioritize safety.

These changes are part of numerous others that can transform our streets into spaces that work for everyone—drivers, cyclists, and walkers! Support our work, and get out there and speak out for safer streets!
