San Leandro 2050 is seeking two part-time paid Community Outreach Coordinators working with residents and organizations in our neighborhoods to build community collaboration towards solutions that address climate change, quality of life and a sustainable future for all. San Leandro 2050 is a community-based organization based in San Leandro, California, formed as a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit in 2019. We envision a city that eliminates its greenhouse gas emissions—currently 573,300 metric tons annually—by 2050, to reverse the negative effects of climate change that are increasingly felt everywhere, including in San Leandro. As Community Outreach Coordinator, you will be part of building a learning community where you can work with diverse individuals, explore new ways of thinking, and be active in your community’s change for the better!

About the Job: Community Outreach Coordinators. San Leandro 2050 (SL2050) Community Outreach Coordinators will be the primary contacts representing SL2050 in the San Leandro community. They will conduct group presentations, make one-to-one connections with city stakeholders, and discuss city and neighborhood challenges and issues at various meetings, events, and tabling opportunities. They will make phone calls, conduct video and in person meetings (as possible due to health restrictions) with community partners, residents, and other groups in the city. The primary goal is to raise awareness among residents about the challenges we face regarding climate change and related health and quality of life issues, query residents about possible solutions they may want to see, and gauge their willingness to be part of putting solutions into action. Coordinators will also enter all information collected into a database. Ideal candidates should live in or have strong connection with San Leandro and have access to a vehicle (mileage will be reimbursed.). Flexible hours at $30/hr. Current California COVID-19 protocols will be maintained (see guidelines here: https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/coronavirus/). Depending on those protocols, the position may involve largely remote work as well as working in a variety of settings. Primary Responsibilities. The Community Outreach Coordinator is a part-time role (10-20 hours per week) with flexible work hours, at $30/hr.

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director, Project Manager and Steering Committee to develop Annual Work Plan and Calendar.

  • Participate in training on the organization’s mission and goals, Environmental Justice, leadership and activism and other possible topics.

  • Identify opportunities to engage residents in target areas through meetings, events and other activities.

  • Co-develop and deliver effective presentations, announcements, social media posts, handouts, and other tools/content as needed.

  • Proactively network and build/maintain long-term relationships and partnerships with public agencies and other organizations such as but not limited to nonprofits and local churches.

  • Represent San Leandro 2050 and the organization’s mission by working at job fairs, community events, San Leandro City Council meetings, meetings with staff at the City of San Leandro, event tabling, other group meetings, and in the community at-large.

  • Update and maintain a database of partner organizations, resident contacts, and roster of event attendees.

  • Assist in the development and distribution of correspondence, brochures and other outreach materials, as well as web content to help increase participation in the program.

  • Connect with relevant groups and individuals with social media presences, with the goal of collaborating on essential and comprehensive digital outreach.

  • Reporting: Coordinate regular progress reporting with the Executive Director and produce monthly tracking reports as requested.

Note: This position does not supervise any staff, however works with interns on various projects and community/partner outreach. Desired skills.

  • Love of meeting people and capacity to work effectively with people from diverse professional, cultural and personal backgrounds.

  • Ability to work with a positive outlook and flexibility in a changing environment and dynamic projects, quickly adjusting key priorities in response to the ever-changing needs of the community and the dynamics of the organization.

  • Desire to address climate change and its intersection with our society’s current economic model, community development and racial and social justice. Expertise in these areas is not required, but is a plus.

  • Experience or strong interest in using virtual tools like Facebook, Mailchimp and Zoom.

  • The ability to achieve results working both individually and with others.

  • Knowledge of and ability to use computers..

  • Good organizational skills with demonstrated capacity to follow-through on reporting requirements in a timely and accurate fashion.

  • Good communications skills with the capacity to motivate individuals and groups with diverse professional and cultural backgrounds, particularly around big picture ideas and long term goals.

  • Strong relationship building and communication skills to represent the organization and interact with outside individuals from the community.

Other requirements.

  • Ability to lift light materials and equipment between home and field and tabling setups.

  • Work flexible hours, some evenings, and weekends.

  • Ability to travel frequently to sites in the community for regular meetings and events.

  • Fluency in Spanish or Cantonese is a huge plus!

  • Live in or have strong connections with San Leandro. Residence in the following San Leandro neighborhoods is a plus: Washington Manor, Floresta Gardens, Halcyon Foothills, Davis East or West, Mulford Gardens, Bonaire or Downtown.

  • Must have access to a personal vehicle, and a valid and current California driver’s license. Mileage reimbursement will be provided.
